When Co-Teaching becomes Co-Learning: Celebrating the Opportunities that can be Afforded by Co-Teach

Thursday 11:20am - 11:50am, (CITRENZ venue 1)

In 2020 six new experiential leaning “Studio” papers were introduced to the Bachelor of Information Technology programme at Otago Polytechnic, Dunedin, New Zealand. This provided a dramatically different approach to teaching and learning. There is a Studio paper in each of the six semesters of our degree. All papers are co-taught. Short taught workshops are combined with team-based projects where learners apply the technical knowledge from their other papers in a collaborative mixed ability group project. These projects are carefully curated to recognise technical skills and experience, (Allen, 2021). While co-teaching was part of the original design, it has become a highly valued and positive experience for teaching staff. Co-teaching is now considered an essential element of the Studio approach. This paper explores the ways in which co-teaching provides an opportunity to enhance the learning experience for not only students but also for lecturers. The recognition of co-teaching as an essential element of our Studio implementation is necessary for the evolution of the Studio papers within our institution, but also serves as a platform for a broader discussion with our CITRENZ colleagues.
